Festive Q&A with Fionnuala Kearney!

What sits on top of your Christmas tree?

A beautiful angel dressed in white. I’d love to say it’s some long lasting family heirloom, but in fact I only bought it a few years ago when I fell in love with it.

Favourite Christmas song?

I have two. (Please, don’t ask me to choose?!) The first, is Fairy-tale of New York. I just love it. Every time I hear it, despite the fact that it tells the story of a couple down on their luck at Christmastime, I feel Christmassy and just want to sing along. I can just hear Shane MacGowan’s voice in my ear now. ‘I could’a been someone…’ and Kirsty’s reply ‘Ah, so could anyone…’

Sing along is something I can’t do with my second favourite which is Holy Night by Pavarotti. Just beautiful and a must in our house on Christmas morning.

Favourite Christmas movie?

“Love Actually”. The parody of the ‘0Wet Wet Wet’ song makes me hoot every time I see it. And that bit when the guy comes to the house with the signs! *sob*

Favourite festive foodie treat?

I LOVE CHRISTMAS DINNER!

The best part of Christmas is…

Being with family. Having all your loved ones around you and celebrating with food, wine and – it has to be done – silly games that only appear on Christmas Day!

The worst part of Christmas is…

The credit card bill in January.

Your best, and worst, Christmas present?

I actually don’t think I’ve ever gotten something I didn’t like so I’m struggling for ‘worst’? The best was a holiday to the Maldives! I know – lucky girl…

When do you do your Christmas shopping?

Late December. For me the shopping part has to be done in the midst of all the hype. It’s part of it.

Any Christmas Day traditions?

The cereal box game! It’s where you get an empty cereal box and the person has to bend down (no arms, hands and no touching the floor) and with your mouth lift it up. As each round continues, an inch is torn off the box until eventually all that’s left is a flat piece of cardboard. HILARIOUS although we’ve had a few almost injuries over the years.

Favourite Christmas book?

Delia Smith’s Christmas. I’d be lost without her.

Favourite Christmassy book cover?

Probably ‘The Gift’ by Cecilia Ahern.

Book sat at the top of your Christmas in July wishlist?

Too many to mention, honestly. I’ve just handed in my manuscript to HarperCollins for my second novel and I have a bit of a break before work starts on it again. I‘m really looking forward to having some time to read. I want to read everything which is a bit of a problem.

When did you find out Santa wasn’t real? Or is he real?

What do you mean? Santa? I met him only last Christmas. Of course, he’s real, Silly!

How would you spend your ideal Christmas?

Surrounded by family and food and wine. I love to cook for a crowd, so throw in a few friends too and I’m a very happy girl.
