Festive Q&A with Carmel Harrington!

What sits on top of your Christmas tree?

We have two trees, because I’m greedy! An angel sits on one, white with silver wings, she’s beautiful and our second tree has a large white star.

Favourite Christmas song?

You’ll notice a trend here, when it comes to Christmas I’m so greedy! So I need two. O Holy Night, with someone like Mariah Carey giving it socks and I’ll be home for Christmas, by Tony Bennett or Michael Buble.

Favourite Christmas movie?

It’s a Wonderful Life, I watch it every year on Christmas Eve, with a drink, wrapping the last of my presents. I adore this movie, it makes me cry, happy, joyful tears every year.

Favourite festive foodie treat?

Aside from Christmas dinner, I love sausage rolls and mince pies. Oh and of course, I can’t forget a large tin of Quality Street to munch on St Stephens Day.

The best part of Christmas is…

Family. Nuff’ said.

The worst part of Christmas is…

Taking down the Christmas decorations. I love my tree and all it’s ornaments, I get so sad to say goodbye to it, each year.

Your best, and worst, Christmas present?

Hmm…. Best Christmas present was a Tiffany charm bracelet from my husband. He adds charms to it, to mark special milestones in our life.

I’m not sure I have a worst one, at least not one I can remember.

When do you do your Christmas shopping?

I tend to start around November and like to have most of my presents sorted by the first week in December.

Any Christmas Day traditions?

We always go to my Mum’s house on Christmas Eve, where she will have sausage rolls and mince pies, out of the oven, ready for us all to munch on. Then we go to a special children's mass, where Santa surprises the kids at the end with some sweets, telling them all to get to bed early. Once we get home and get the children asleep, then its time for Its A Wonderful Life, with a drink!

Favourite Christmas book?

The Night Before Christmas - in December, we read it to Amelia and Nate every night.

Favourite Christmassy book cover?

I’ve dreamed of writing a Christmas book for years, and this year that dream comes true, with Every Time a Bell Rings. The cover for this, well it’s my favourite. I know I probably shouldn’t say my own, but I’m just so excited and happy about this book, I might even make the cover into my Christmas cards this year! :)

Book sat at the top of your Christmas in July wishlist?

Alexander Browne’s Not Just For Christmas.

When did you find out Santa wasn’t real? Or is he real?

In our house he is. Having a 5 and 3 year old, is a gift, it really is. I get to experience the magic of believing all over again. We love the movie The Polar Express and have a silver bell similar to that in the movie. We ring it often in our house and we always hear the sleigh bells, because we all believe.

How would you spend your ideal Christmas?

Genuinely, as sappy as this may sound, as long as I’m with my husband and children, I don’t mind where we are.

This year, I’m super excited though, because we have just moved into a new house. This feels like our forever home, so it will be really special having our first Christmas there.

I predict lots of new decorations to celebrate. Mind you, for me, any excuse!
