In the village of Martindale, hundreds of miles north of the new English capital of Windsor, sixteen-year-old Silver Blackthorn takes the Reckoning. This coming-of-age test not only decides her place in society - Elite, Member, Inter or Trog - but also determines that Silver is to become an Offering for King Victor.

But these are uncertain times and no one really knows what happens to the teenagers who disappear into Windsor Castle. Is being an Offering the privilege everyone assumes it to be, or do the walls of the castle have something to hide?

Trapped in a maze of ancient corridors, Silver finds herself in a warped world of suspicion where it is difficult to know who to trust and who to fear. The one thing Silver does know is that she must find a way out . .

Reckoning is an amazing book. The synopsis sounded great and I was expecting something good but not this good. The fantastic writing and protagonist, Silver Blackthorn, really made me love Reckoning and I can’t wait for more from this trilogy.

Anyone who was sixteen on July 1 had to take the Reckoning which tests whether they’re a Member, Elite, Trog or Intermediate. More so than that, Silver learns she is to become an Offering for King Victor. Even though you know this is going to happen, I was quietly shouting at the book because being an Offering was not going to be the honour it was made out to be! Silver was an instantly likeable character and so easy to root for. She was strong and determined and made the perfect heroine. It was impossible to not want the best for her and she had an easy personality to believe in.

Reckoning gripped me from the start and there were so many twists, it just kept getting better and better. It was a breath-taking read with some phenomenal world-building. It’s fantasy of course but it was still all so plausible. I loved the role technology took in this old setting because it made the book feel up-to-date and helped us see more of Silver’s intelligence.

The pace was spot on, making the book thrilling and very difficult to stop reading. The ending (and in fact the whole book) was brilliant and has left me really excited to see what the author will bring us next. I can wait, but only because I know books like this are rare to find. If all authors could write sci-fi and dystopia like this, I’d never feel the need to pick up another genre again…
