After a whirlwind courtship, Brittany Beresford married her Prince Charming and looked forward to living happily ever after. Five years later, she’s been reduced to a not-quite-desperate housewife, with a husband who spends more time flossing his teeth than holding meaningful conversations with her.

She braves his disapproval and turns working mother and, other than feeling far more drawn to a handsome baker she works with than him, things seem to be looking up. But then she discovers that his “hobbies” include something even worse than golf – and he expects her to put up and shut up.

Fairy tale illusions shattered, but still believing marriage is for life and wanting the best for her son, Brittany has a choice to make: should she follow her heart, or her conscience?

But I Said Forever is the second book in the Parker Sisters series (first book The Dr Pepper Prophecies), but can be read as a standalone.

Brittany Beresford is married to a complete and utter jerk. That’s the first thing I picked up on in But I Said Forever – which is a short, fun story with an entertaining set of characters and lots of humour along the way. Phillip, Brittany’s husband and father of her son James, annoyed the hell out of me. (He was meant to). He was rude and arrogant and had the strictest, most ridiculously outdated views on women who are wives and/or mothers. He was a bit of a pig, to say the least, and acted like he was born hundreds of years ago. How dare Brittany want to have a career and friends instead of being a stay at home mum… Not that Phillip himself spent any time with poor James. My hatred for Phillip actually made me love this book, because rooting for Brittany to think about herself and create a happy life for herself was made SO easy. I did love seeing Phillip as a bit of a pantomime villain, and the first Jennifer Gilby Roberts book I’ve read became a real hit, real quick.

But I Said Forever is told in first person, from Brittany’s perspective. I loved the style this was written in. Brittany is not always too great at saying what she really means, not to other people, but when narrating, she brings a lot of humour and I loved her little cries for help and reading what she was really thinking by catching the responses she wasn’t planning on making vocal. Brittany soon finds herself on a month’s trial at For Goodness Cake bakery (loved the name) and this was the main setting that provided us with a whole new cast of amusing characters, who were all so quirky and different. Along with James’ nannies too, the characters were wonderful to read in But I Said Forever and it was difficult to pick a favourite. Abby and Lauren made me laugh a lot whereas Zack and Carly were a bit more sensitive and caring. There were plenty of other characters who kept the story fresh and vibrant and we also meet Mel, who is Brittany’s sister and the main character in the standalone first book, The Dr. Pepper Prophecies, which I’ll be getting myself a copy of.

I love books about following your dreams and building a life for yourself and so I found But I Said Forever was a delight to read. Not just blessed with fab characters, there were a few surprises along the way, most notably idiot Phillip’s secret which was unpredictable and uh, just a little unexpected… There was a lovely focus on friendship in this book and there were a few certain characters that when they got on the same page, you just wouldn’t want to mess with. But I Said Forever was a gorgeous read, one which gives you the perfect excuse to eat cake whilst you sit back and enjoy an entertaining story, made even better with its simplistic and charming ending.

Jennifer Gilby Roberts Jennifer Gilby Roberts has a degree in physics and a postgraduate certificate in computing, so a career as a chick lit author was inevitable really. She was born and grew up in Surrey/Greater London, but now lives in Richmond, North Yorkshire with her husband, small daughter, two middle-aged cats and a lot of dust bunnies.

She can be found getting red-faced at zumba class, reading historical porn (as her husband calls it – Regency romance to the rest of us) and humming nursery rhymes while going round Tesco.
