CLIC Sargent Get in Character Campaign ~ Interview with Holly Martin.

Holly Martin is offering fans the opportunity to have their name appear in a forthcoming novel. She is one of over 70 bestselling authors involved in the Get in Character eBay auction, an annual fundraiser organised by CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. The highest bidders for each author buy the opportunity to have a character named after them in their next book, and immortality in print. The auction runs until 8pm Sunday, March 8th.

Can you tell us a bit more about CLIC Sargent and the Get in Character auction?

CLIC Sargent is fantastic charity that provides support to children and young people with cancer and their families too. The team there provide emotional, practical and financial support that really helps them through treatment, and helps them to retain some kind of normality in their lives.

How do you feel about being involved in such a campaign?

I think it’s a wonderful idea to donate a character. I know in the past when I’ve used real people’s names in my books that people get a real kick out of seeing themselves immortalised in print. For fans to be able to buy a character in their favourite author’s book is fantastic for them and more importantly it raises awareness and money for CLIC Sargent.

The winner of your auction will become a character in your next novel The Secrets of Clover Castle - can you tell us a bit about the book?

It’s a chicklit, so lots of sweet romance and funny moments but it’s sort of a famous five for adults, there’s a castle, a ghost, secret passageways, treasure and a family curse too.

Do you already have an idea for the winning bidder’s character or will you wait until after the auction before building them into the novel?

I have an idea which character it will be, but it depends whether the winner is a man or a woman. It’s quite tricky because I couldn’t have an old man be called something young and trendy, so it will depend hugely on the name.

If you were bidding in any of the other wonderful CLIC Sargent auctions, which one would you most like to win and why?

I was going to bid to be in Lucy Robinson’s book, I love her work and it would be a huge privilege to be a character in her next book. But her price escalated very quickly as clearly she has many fans.

If you could be made into a character in any book, which book would you choose?

Someone from Harry Potter, probably Hermione. I would love to spend a day at Hogwarts learning tricks, spells and potions. I’d love to meet some of the fantastical characters like the hippogriff, centaur and thestral and to wander down Diagon Ally and see all the shops and drink a butterbeer in the Leaky Cauldron.

How does it feel to know that people are bidding because they want to be a part of something you’ve written?

It’s amazing. I’ve been around for about a year so I’m not as well-known as most of these authors. I didn’t think anyone would bid on me at all. But I’ve had quite a bit of interest.

The importance of this auction is that all the proceeds will be supporting CLIC Sargent – can you please express how vital supporting this children’s cancer charity is?

It’s a great charity and I’m very proud to be able to be a part of it and help in some small way fund the fantastic work they do.
