The Lightbearers is the story of an ancient Egyptian King and Queen, Akhenaton and Nefertiti, who have been reincarnating together for the past 3300 years. They have been entrusted with the mission of The Lightbearers, whose responsibility is to be guardians of the human race and to enlighten any whose path they cross.

The story unfolds in the 21st century where Jean Crystal, Nefertiti’s incarnate, has been kidnapped by Dr. Natas, whose plan for world domination has been temporarily disrupted by Jean and her husband George, Akhenaten’s incarnate.

Jean is held captive on a laboratory table. George has already been assassinated and while awaiting her own demise, George pays Jean a visit in the lab, assuring her of their eternal vow to each other. Jean is very shortly, thereafter, assassinated. Upon the joyful reunion of their spirits on Petite Terre, a tiny island just off the Normandy Province of France, Jean and George plan their return. They must pick a place, a time and a signal by which they can find and identify each other in their subsequent lifetime.

Their reunion takes place 20 years later, albeit not without a hitch. Together they set out to rescue the United States from Dr. Natas’s well-placed plans, he has already begun to execute.

Review:

I was torn on how I felt about The Lightbearers because having read the synopsis on Goodreads before beginning to read, it gave away too much for me. I found that for the majority of the book, in the back of my mind I was thinking how I knew certain things were and weren’t going to work out and instead of those things being little teasers and hints towards the plot, they were actually crucial moments in The Lightbearers.

However, I did really enjoy the book.

There are many Lightbearers such as myself scattered all over the universe; it is our responsibility to watch over those like yourself, until you have learned the mysteries of life and death. Once that mission is completed, it will no longer be necessary for me to take on human form. I can exist as pure energy, like that from the sun. All it takes, my child, is peace and harmony from within to begin to reach heights that you have not yet even begun to imagine.

Straight away, Nora M. Garcia throws us right into the story as it opens with one of the main characters, Jean, being held captive. The author then uses flashbacks intelligently to bring us up-to-date with Jean and George’s story and why Jean has been kidnapped.

I loved all the switches in time throughout The Lightbearers. At first I found them a little bit confusing because they are quite long and I did lose track of the present events towards the beginning. But once I got used to them, I grew to love this writing style of Nora M. Garcia; sometimes in books I find it hard to keep up with the history of the characters but this helped me follow their stories and made me feel for Jean a lot more.

There were lots of little twists and turns and I didn’t find myself bored with the story at any time. I loved how Nora M. Garcia wrote the characters; especially how much she made me hate Dr. Natas! Everything tied together really well too – nothing seemed to be forgotten and the characters all had links with each other in some way.

I did think the ending should have been longer; it seemed like the whole book had been leading up to this moment and then it ended in a flash.

However, overall I found this a really entertaining book. I rarely read sci-fi books but this didn’t affect my thoughts on the book at all – I would definitely recommend The Lightbearers to fans of fantasy books.
