My Top Ten Books of 2016

The New Year is here and 2017 is already shaping up to be another great year of books. Ten days into the year and I’ve already read proofs of three books out this year which I think will be huge and I’m looking forward to sharing my reviews for those books over the next few weeks.

For now though, I’m looking back on the books I read in 2016. Even though I didn’t have as much time to read as I would have liked last year, I still read several books which left a mark on me and it was tough narrowing my books of the year down to just ten. But finally I settled on my favourites and here they are…

10. Crush by Eve Ainsworth

Crush is a really brave YA story about an abusive relationship which had me feeling a range of emotions, completely moving me. The emotional impact and strength to this story blew me away and I found it to be a really unforgettable novel.

9. After the Lie by Kerry Fisher

I’ve enjoyed all of Kerry’s books but After the Lie was her best yet. Really I just love everything about Kerry’s writing – her characterisation, the suspense and the brilliant humour. I still think about the characters in this book now.

8. Behind Closed Doors by BA Paris

This thriller had everything. It’s an addictive, belter of a debut novel that I couldn’t bring myself to put down. The author’s next book, The Breakdown, is just as good – so I’m very excited to read anything else from her in future.

7. Falling by Julie Cohen

I was genuinely gutted when this book came to an end. The writing was so heartfelt and the storytelling was so addictive, I just didn’t want it to finish.

6. The Things I Should Have Told You by Carmel Harrington

Carmel’s books are such a treat and The Things I Should Have Told You was one book I couldn’t wait for in 2016. This book is charming and inspiring, with a plot that felt really original as it followed the Guinness family on a camper van adventure to mend the bonds between them.

5. The Bucket List to Mend a Broken Heart by Anna Bell

This book was pure sunshiney escapism. I smiled so much reading this book – with my favourite fictional romance of 2016, it was really just a joy to read.

4. Another Love by Amanda Prowse

This book is a really really special one that turned me into an emotional wreck. I haven’t stopped recommending Another Love to people since I read it – the portrayal of Romilly’s alcoholism is honest and moving and wholly believable and this book is one I think everyone should read.

3. A Suitable Lie by Michael J Malone

Talking about books everybody should read… I have never read anything like A Suitable Lie before but this is a truly exceptional, impactful and important novel. I couldn’t forget the characters in this book even if I tried.

2. Summer at the Comfort Food Café by Debbie Johnson

Oh I absolutely adored every single thing about Summer at the Comfort Food Café. Laura was my favourite protagonist of 2016 and her story really struck a chord with me. I loved the layers of hope and optimism in this book and of course the Comfort Food Café itself which I really still wish was real!

1. In Her Wake by Amanda Jennings

In Her Wake was the first book I read in 2016 and the best of them all. Hauntingly beautiful and mesmerising, I was hooked on this book from page one and it honestly hasn’t let me go since. I can still picture every scene liked I watched it as a film - and really, it should be made into a film! If you haven’t read it already (and why not?), it’s definitely one you won’t want to miss.

  2. I haven't even heard of any of these, I feel so behind! A Crush looks so good though. I've saved this post so I can download a few of these when my kindle is looking low on new reads
