You know you're a book addict when...

Happy bank holiday Monday! I thought today, (whilst you're all hopefully at home with your feet up reading books), would be the perfect day to share those moments when you can tell you're a book addict... You can deny it, of course, but we all know it's true!

You know you're a book addict when...

1. Anytime you get any form of income, you work out how many books you can buy with it and how bills really aren’t all that important…

2. You’re constantly justifying your latest book delivery to your family.

3. It’s 4pm and you’re still in your pyjamas, hair a mess, reading just one more chapter…

4. It’s 4am and you’re wide awake, frantically turning the pages of a book you can’t put down…

5. Your legs are covered in bruises from all the times you’ve walked into walls/tables/people whilst reading.

6. You find books everywhere. In bed, in the bathroom, in the fridge… (the last one is probably just me).

7. You have more photos of books on your phone than of family, friends and pets…

8. Entering a bookshop feels like coming home.

9. Lending someone a book feels like signing your life away. You give them a hundred different terms and conditions before handing it over, if you even make it that far.

10. You’re constantly weighed down by carrying at least one book and e-reader everywhere. Even when there’s no time to read.

11. You look forward to Thursday more than you look forward to Friday.

12. The phrase “too many books” doesn’t make any sense to you whatsoever.

13. You ask for books for your birthday. For Christmas. For Valentine’s Day. Mother’s Day. Father’s Day. For every occasion you can think of.

14. They say no. You ask for a giftcard instead.

15. It makes your day when your favourite authors follow you on Twitter.

16. You choose your holiday destination based on a place you discovered in a book.

17. You sulk because the place you want to go to on holiday is actually fictional.

18. You’ve perfected the death stare for every time somebody interrupts you when you’re reading.

19. You spend more time choosing your next read than actually reading the book.

20. You have to limbo your way into every room to avoid colliding with the huge stacks of books you have piled everywhere.

21. Before you go on holiday, you squeeze all the books you can possibly fit into your suitcase before realising you haven’t packed any clothes yet.

22. You can’t go to a shop without bringing home a new book.

23. Dreaming about something that happened in a book becomes a daily occurrence.

24. Something traumatic happens to a character in the book you’re reading and you feel like your world is ending. You need time to come to terms with it.

25. You debate the next piece of furniture you can lose so you can squeeze in a new bookcase.

26. Having less than a four-figure TBR pile means you definitely need more books.

27. It genuinely upsets you that you can’t read twenty books at once or have time to read every book you’d like to read. (Nobody lives that long…)

28. You work out how many social events you can turn down, so you can read, before your friends wonder if you’re still alive.

29. You fall asleep clutching onto a book.

30. Non-matching book covers in series drive you mad.

31. You’ve called in sick at work, or skived a day at Uni/college/school, so you have time to finish that book you can’t put down.

32. You can’t find your favourite authors on social media and it’s so unfair because you’re so eager to declare all your love for them and their latest book and force them to hurry up writing the next…

33. You actually want your book club to focus less on the wine and more on the book (ok, maybe not…)

34. Everybody receives a book from you when it’s their birthday, even though they never read more than six pages of the last one you bought them.

35. You think you’ve actually fallen in love with a fictional character. (Guilty).

36. You’ve missed your stop on the bus or train because you forgot to look up from your book.

37. You ache like hell thanks to all the crazy positions you find yourself in trying to catch a glimpse of what book that stranger is reading.

38. A stranger is reading a book you liked and you instantly find yourself a little bit in love with them.

39. People dread you watching the movie adaptation of a book with them because they know you’re only there to point out every reason why the movie is never as good as the book.

40. You’re asked for one book recommendation and six hours later, they leave with sixty book recommendations.

41. You’ve memorised more book quotes than birthdays and anniversaries.

42. Plans have already been made for that library you’re definitely going to own one day.

43. Sniffing and stroking books isn’t weird – it’s just something you have to do before reading a new book.

44. You’ve suffered from more book hangovers than alcohol hangovers.

45. The time between finishing one book and starting another feels so sad and empty.

46. The first thing you do when you travel somewhere new is work out where all the bookshops are and go explore them.

47. You’ve had the last chapter of a book left to read for longer than you spent reading the rest of the book because you can’t bear to let the characters go just yet.

48. You’ve asked the question: “why won’t anybody pay me to read books?” on several occasions.

49. You’ve already worked out the books you’d take with you if your house was on fire or you were stuck on a desert island.

50. Bank holidays are made for reading.

Just to point out, I don't relate to all fifty signs! Only about 48 of them... ;)

Any to add? Or let me know if you recognise any of these signs, I'd love to have it confirmed that I'm not alone in being a book addict...

  1. You go out to buy the new shoes you need, and come home with a bag full of books and no shoes.
You go out to visit a new city and find nothing appealing in the sights or the shops - then just as you start to despair, you find a huge bookshop.

  5. Great post Sophie. Although I have more books in my TBR pile than I will probably ever have time to read, I can't help entering every prize draw going for books I want to read (which is a lot!) in the hope of adding to the pile!
