When Caleb Wardell, the infamous 'Chicago Sniper', escapes from death row two weeks before his execution, the FBI calls on the services of Carter Blake, a man with certain specialised talents whose skills lie in finding those who don't want to be found. A man to whom Wardell is no stranger.

Blake and partner Elaine Banner must track Wardell down as he cuts a swathe across America, apparently killing at random. As they try desperately to second guess a man who kills purely for the thrill of it, they uncover a hornets' nest of lies and corruption. Now Blake must break the rules and go head to head with the FBI if he is to stop Wardell and expose a deadly conspiracy that will rock the country...

Review:

The Killing Season had me intrigued right from the first line and the rest of the book did not disappoint. Action packed and with a clever plot, this thriller was fantastic and flawless.

This book was full of great characters. I loved the protagonist, Blake, and The Killing Season worked so well for me because I could really root for him. Blake was an interesting character but he wasn’t the only one. Wardell was a brilliant villain and every other character introduced had been developed well too.

The interaction and pacing in this book was spot on but what really stood out for me was that none of the writing felt like it was from a debut novel. It felt effortless and assured – something you’d read from the best-selling authors who’ve been releasing excellent thrillers for decades. Not ones I’m going to name-drop because for an excellent novel like this, Mason Cross should be recognised for his own name and not the other authors that came before him.

The Killing Season was a riveting, edge-of-your-seat book, impressive throughout and I loved it. The whole story was executed brilliantly and whilst I think the author deserves to bask in the glory of a great debut novel, I’d much rather him hurry up with another one, respectfully.
